Sam Simpson

I am a speech and language therapist, person-centred counsellor, supervisor and trainer with over 25 years’ experience of working with people who stammer and their families in the public, private, education and voluntary sectors. I have a particular interest in critical disability studies, stammering activism and what stammering can teach us about ourselves and the world.

Together with Carolyn Cheasman and Rachel Everard, I co-edited ‘Stammering Therapy from the Inside: New Perspectives on Working with Young People and Adults’ in 2013, which set out to enrich professional accounts of contemporary stammering therapy by including clients as co-authors of therapy knowledge.

Together with Patrick Campbell and Chris Constantino, I co-edited ‘Stammering Pride and Prejudice: Difference not Defect’ in 2019. Combining personal narrative, art and disability theory, the book documents how society has historically disabled people who stammer and the diverse ways in which people are creating novel and exciting understandings of their speech.

In 2024, together with Cathy Sparkes and Deborah Harding, I co-edited ‘Supervision in Speech and Language Therapy: Personal Stories and Professional Wisdom’, a collection of narratives exploring the breadth and scope of supervision from professional governance through personal and professional growth to enhancing practitioner confidence and wellbeing.

Since 2015 I have collaborated with Iain Wilkie and Action for Stammering Children (ASC) to co-develop and deliver mentoring programmes for people who stammer under the age of 25.

I actively support 50 Million Voices, an ambitious global initiative raising awareness, reducing barriers and fostering stammering allyship to transform the world of work for people who stammer.

I am a founding member of Stuttering Commons, an international collective that aims to deconstruct, unsettle, rupture and bend fluency privilege by supporting collective action and social change.
