After high school, I passionately dedicated myself to the study of Philosophy at La Sapienza University in Rome. I continued my studies until my Master’s degree. These studies allowed me to develop a critical thinking, a deeper look at reality and the ability to capture details. Later, I felt the desire to apply these tools in a professional field, that would allow me to take care of people every day. That is why I decided to study Speech and Language Pathology. My studies and training let me dedicate myself to learning disabilities and stuttering. In particular, thanks to my meeting with Professor Tomaiuoli, since the second year of my studies I started attending an internship at CRC (Centro Ricerca e Cura) with tutors who are experts in stuttering. Tutors like Francesca Del Gado patiently introduced me to the world of stuttering by providing me the essential tools to understand and love it. At CRC there is a multidimensional and holistic approach to work. The attention is paid not only to one client’s characteristic, but to the client’s wholeness. It is also a very stimulating environment from the point of view of both clinical practice and research as well on that of personal growth.
I confess that initially ‘the world of stuttering’ attracted me, but at the same time frightened me a lot. I had never met a person who stuttered (or maybe I had never realized it) and the therapies seemed very challenging. Working on communication, stuttering, resilience, problem-solving and at the same time engaging the client’s whole system seemed like a titanic task. With time, curiosity and attraction got the better of fear. So, I did my thesis project with Professor Tomaiuoli, entitled Executive functions in MIDA profiles: a sample study on children who stutter. The study was conducted for more than a year and concerned pre-school children who stuttered coming to the CRC.
In 2018 and 2021 I attended ICOS Conference (III and IV Edition), the first as a student and the last as a speech therapist. In particular at the last Conference, I was part of the Tomaiuoli’s team, that carried out the study of Virtual Reality and Biosensors applied to stuttering assessment. Since 2020, I have been collaborating with Professor Tomaiuoli to train thesis students and carry out thesis projects on stuttering in collaboration with La Sapienza University of Rome and Torvergata University of Rome. In 2021, I was the coauthor of an article with the title Telepractice in school-age children who stutter: A controlled before and after study to evaluate the efficacy of MIDA-SP (Tomaiuoli et., 2021) and a book entitled Balbuzie in adolescenza. Il fumetto per intervenire in modo efficace (Tomaiuoli, 2021).
I am currently doing clinical and research activities, and I wanted to deepen my interest and education in fluency disorders by enrolling in the ECSF course.
